The current ‘Family Shopper’ on Canon Street was originally the Temperance Hall, an important public building in 19th century Aberdare that was built in 1858 at a cost of £3,000, provided by the Total Abstinence Society. At the time, the hall was the largest space in Aberdare to hold public gatherings. The 5th Lord Aberdare and the Mayor Cllr. Robert Smith unveiled the Blue Plaque in its temporary position on 11 June 2009.
