The last Ice Age shaped Rhondda’s landscape, glaciers gouging out our deep and narrow twin valleys. After the ice retreated, around 10,000 years ago, streams softened the steep slopes. When the coal boom filled the valley floors, the uplands were left bare. To escape Rhondda’s urban sprawl, residents had only to head ‘up the mountain’ to find peace and quiet. The splendid vantage points on the Bwlch and Rhigos, the Llanwonno and Maerdy mountain roads, and the views over Mid Rhondda from here on Penrhys offer perspectives which have inspired poets and pilgrims, and still delight Rhondda people every day.
