Alongside individual stars, like actors Glyn and Donald Houston, and Sir Stanley Baker, the Rhondda boasts a long history of collective performance. Known as ‘the Valley of Song’, it’s produced world-class male choirs and brass bands. Today, the Treorchy, Pendyrus and Cambrian choirs, and the Cory, Parc and Dare, and Lewis Merthyr bands uphold that proud tradition, constantly reinventing themselves while staying true to their musical heritage. Treorchy’s Park and Dare Hall – built with the pennies of colliers – provides a splendid auditorium which staged the popular comedies of Frank Vickery, and has influenced the development of generations of talented amateurs, and modern-day professionals like actor Daniel Evans and singer Sophie Evans.
