Station 5 - Rhondda's Community Spirit

Cwm Clydach Countryside Park

Cwm Clydach Countryside Park was once the site of Gorki Drift Mine, Cambrian Colliery, and the Bush Houses, an incredibly close community, even by Rhondda standards. The valley’s renowned neighbourliness was born of the tight bonds of mining, families facing hardship and danger as one. Rhondda’s communities proclaim and live by a clear maxim – that we’re stronger together, that ‘what matters to us matters more than what matters to me’. That’s brilliantly illustrated today by the Cambrian Village Trust, which works in partnership towards long-term improvements in wellbeing, social engagement, outdoor education and the environment. And – of course – it runs an amazing community cafe here!
