Chapels – built by Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, Congregationalists and other Non-conformists – stood as defining features of Rhondda’s growing towns. The dynamic faith they proclaimed could transform individual lives. Chapels were also social centres, self-governing democracies, and beacons of culture, music and education. Many preached and practised a ‘social gospel’, taking action to succour the needy and vulnerable. By now, some Rhondda chapel buildings have disappeared, some fallen into disuse, some have themselves been transformed for new purposes – like Soar here, beautifully restored, adapted and run by Valleys Kids as a thriving community hub for children and families, with a state-of-the-art performance space.
