It’s a rare childhood that’s constantly happy, but generations of Rhondda people look back on their formative years as something special. In our large, close communities, playmates were in plentiful supply – for street games like ‘strong horses’ and bolter, skipping or with bat and ball. Mountain slopes and old colliery workings were ‘adventure playgrounds’ before the term was invented. Rhondda always valued education, and school brought its own pleasures and pressures. But then there was home-time, escape to the park, summer outings and the magic of our imaginations – sometimes stimulated by fabulous tales, like the one told of the lake here, Llyn y Forwyn.
