Skilled and resourceful, holding families together in the face of hardship, ill-health and – too often – tragedy, Rhondda women were more than well-equipped to take on the role of the traditional ‘Welsh Mam’. But they also worked outside the home, in factories, offices, schools and shops, in business and public service. Some – like Elizabeth Andrews, Annie Powell and Sylvia Jones – became campaigners, pioneers and leaders in politics, education and the trade unions. In the 1984-5 Miners’ Strike, the Maerdy Women’s Support Group marched into prominence as powerful advocates of their community’s interests and values. Formidable Rhondda women: we owe them a huge debt.
