“Coming from school, jumping into the big world. It was a big world. It was up there, all the way up there! I'd never been to Treorchy in my life. Our hub was Tonypandy. People didn't travel so much, so that was a little bit frightening... But Polikoff’s put on buses. Double-decker buses. It was so big that the car park was huge. These buses would come from Maerdy, they'd come from Clydach Vale and they'd come from Gilfach, they'd come from Blaenrhondda – all over the Rhondda Fach and Fawr... So we would spend I think like six weeks in the training and I think we used to go to the big canteen for lunch and we'd be looking – ‘It’s big out here!’ And then someone would say ‘I’m going out today!’... So you go into the factory floor and it was massive! It was huge! Rows and rows and rows of sewing machines.”
